My 6 favourite tricks to naturally ease period pain

Period pain is no joke. It can completely disrupt our lives and while it is normalised and even expected, it is not normal. It is a sign that something is not right and needs to be investigated.

Menstrual cramps can be a real pain - literally. They can have a considerable impact on our lives and leave us curled up in bed for days or they could just leave you feeling uncomfortable. It is important to note that anything more than mild discomfort is worth looking into with a medical professional as it is a sign from your body that something is not quite right.


After years of battling excruciating pain and exploring almost every available remedy, I've found a few natural methods that really work. The best thing is that all of these methods are easily done at home and wont cost you a bunch of money!


1. Heat Therapy

This is my go-to for immediate relief. A heat pack or hot water bottle placed on your lower abdomen can work wonders. The warmth helps relax the muscles in your uterus and improve blood flow, which can significantly reduce cramping. I remember countless nights spent curled up with my trusty hot water bottle—it’s a lifesaver. And if you really want to pamper yourself, try soaking in a hot bath. Being submerged in warm water not only provides heat but also takes the weight off your pelvic muscles, offering extra relief. Plus, it’s a perfect excuse for some me time.


2. Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs are another fantastic method for easing menstrual cramps. Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can penetrate the skin and help soothe your muscles. Just soak a piece of flannel or an old piece of cloth in castor oil, place it on your lower abdomen, and cover it with an old towel and use a heat pack or bottle. Leave it on for about 30-45 minutes. This process not only eases cramps but also promotes detoxification and supports liver health. It’s like giving your uterus a gentle, healing hug. Just be mindful, as castor oil will stain clothes, so make sure to protect your clothing and surroundings.

3. Gentle Exercise

I know what you’re thinking—exercise during cramps? No, thank you. But hear me out. Gentle exercises, such as yoga or stretching, can help alleviate pain. Poses that focus on opening the hips and relaxing the lower back are particularly effective. Some examples of these are Child pose, Fish pose, Butterfly pose, Seated forward bend pose and Reclined goddess pose. Even a short walk can help. Movement increases blood flow and releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers.


4. Herbal Teas

My favourite herbal teas for period pain are chamomile, ginger, and peppermint tea. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that help relax the uterus. Ginger can reduce inflammation and pain, and peppermint can soothe muscle contractions. Sipping on a warm cup of herbal tea during your period can be both a relaxing ritual and a natural way to manage pain.


5. Magnesium Supplements

Magnesium is a mineral that plays a crucial role in muscle relaxation and nerve function. Taking magnesium supplements during your period can help reduce cramps and other menstrual symptoms. You can also increase your intake of magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. I’ve found that incorporating magnesium into my diet has made a noticeable difference in the severity of my cramps. It’s a simple addition that can have a significant impact on your overall well-being.


6. Womb Massage

Womb massage is an incredible way to connect with your body and alleviate your cramps. This technique involves gently massaging your lower abdomen in circular motions, starting just above the pubic bone and moving upwards towards your belly button. Use a bit of warm oil, like coconut or lavender oil, to make the massage more soothing. Womb massage helps improve blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation. It's also a beautiful way to show love and care to your body. Taking a few moments each day to practice womb massage can help ease cramps and enhance your overall well-being during your menstrual cycle.
